Hi there friends! I have had some requests for a binding tutorial after posting some images on Instagram and I have partnered with Moda to bring you a full tutorial (with LOADS of pictures) on how to make and sew binding for your quilts and other projects.

When I started quilting I searched for tutorials online about all the different steps of quilting and used a collaboration of many methods to figure out what worked for me. That was about 5-6 years ago, and recently, I was thinking "why post a tutorial on binding? Everyone knows how to bind!" FALSE. It was like I forgot I was once looking, myself, for tutorials on the basics of quilting. So, I hope, if you are just learning, re-learning, or looking for a new method, that you hop on over to the Moda Cutting Table and check out my tutorial! Happy Binding!

Today's Fabric Stash Friday is Ale's pick. It's really "springy". Appropriate with the warmer weather we've been having lately, wouldn't you say? This palette is like a bowl of apples, oranges, lemons, limes, kiwi!! It made me dig deep into my green stash and find something other than bright, bright lime green or chartreuse. I tend to love the brighter greens and don't stash too many natural/more subdued greens. That being said, I LOVE this fabric stack. It is so refreshing. I need more greens!!

This collection has several prints by Lizzy House, a couple Carolyn Friedlander prints and some fabulous older Sandi Henderson prints. How would your Fabric Stash Friday look today? Do you need more gold tone fabrics in your stash? Want to play along? Check out the Fabric Stash Friday flickr group! We want to see what you have in your stash too! What would you make with these fabrics? I'm thinking a new table topper for my coffee table.

I'm pretty sure I found this image on Pinterest and I am seriously swooning over this color palette. It's not as bright as I usually go, but I am really feeling the muted tones. It's calming, right? And really, you can't usually go wrong with gold in your stash. (especially if it's sparkly) ;)

If you don't know by now, aqua/mint is my very favorite color. I want to paint every wall in my house aqua. And sew everything in aqua. It may not surprise you that I had about triple the amount of mint/aqua fabrics pulled for today's Fabric Stash Friday and had to put some back. It was hard.

More Pearl Bracelets in this stash today (a FAB mixer). Along with a few solids, mirror ball dots and some metallics for that perfect sparkle. It looks like there are a few prints in there from V&Co. too. (LOVE her new line) Wouldn't this make a gorgeous quilt? Who wants to come make one with me? What's your favorite color palette right now? What colors are you just totally inspired by?

I have this friend. Her name is Ale. She's extremely talented. We chat all the time about practically anything. You can read about her art on her Golden Willow Quilts blog. Anyway, we did a pretty special swap recently and I made her this cozy afghan. Fun right??? WELL, it was getting so much attention on my Instagram feed (@InsideThePaperBox) that I've had some requests for more swapping! If you head over to my IG you can follow along as I make them.

This crochet pattern is called the Sunburst Granny Square and you can find the tutorial I used HERE. If you're a little knowledgeable in crochet, it should be a breeze. If you're just starting out, YouTube is a GREAT tool for learning new stitches. I utilize it ALL the time. I've had a LOT of inquiries about the type of yarn I used on this one. It's a bit of a mix, so hard to list it all, but what I can tell you is the majority of the colors for the circles were Berroco, Vintage. I used mostly worsted weight acrylic/wool blends with a couple 100% wool and a couple aran weights mixed in. The grey joining yarn I used is Vanna's Choice, Lions Brand 100% acrylic in Linen. I made this one 10x14 squares making the final measurement ABOUT 45x60".

I'm currently hosting a casual little Crochet-A-Long on Instagram for the Sunburst Granny Afghan (#SunburstAfgahnCAL) Go check it out and I hope you get inspired to try it out yourself and share your progress.

I'm also working on another afghan (because I have like, project ADD or something) using this circle pattern. It's much quicker and uses less yarn than the Sunburst Granny Square, a great pattern if you're hesitant to try the sunburst. I'll keep you posted about how that one is coming along in the next few weeks.
But this GoldWillow afghan has gone to live at it's new home in Portland. I'm extremely happy she is so in love with how it turned out. Crafty friends are the best!

Okay friends, do you want to push yourself to use that funky print you've had forever and are just too scared to use? OR do you want to work on that color specific custom order and LOVE it? OR do you just want to play with pretty fabric for a while and challenge yourself to put together new color combinations that might be a little out of your comfort zone? FABRIC STASH FRIDAY! I've teamed up with Ale from Golden Willow Quilts and we have chosen some really fabulous color palettes to inspire new fabric combinations right from your very own stash!! You don't even have to go to the fabric store to play! The goal here is to maybe pick one of your favorite colors and combine it with something new and fresh.

This week Ale picked this sweet image that is actually a complete contradiction to my previous statement because it is so so me, right up my alley. I LOVE AQUA! And then pair it with some reds and PEACH?!?! Y.U.M. (I MAY have chosen a few more prints than necessary) I super love pretty much all Bonnie & Camille fabrics and it shows in this weeks stash. Several prints from a couple of their earlier fabric lines (Ruby, Bliss,.... Sundae stripe is a FAV print of mine and happens to be making a return in their new line, Miss Kate). I threw in some basics like chevron, stripes, dots and solids. Then some more unique staples like Pezzy, Pearl Bracelets and Crosshatch. And how cute are those apples and the Henna Garden by Sandi Henderson?? This is a perfect color combination in my opinion and was super easy for me to pull together.

The palette below was created using the Palette Builder at PlayCrafts and it pulls Kona solids for you to use to create your perfect fabric combination (!!!!) Awesome right??? Kona Ice Frappe??? Perfect. Head on over to see what Ale has created for her Fabric Stash Friday using the same inspiration. (You won't be sorry, her fabric collection is amazing)

Wow! What an experience you guys! I've basically been looking forward to SS13 since I saw (on IG) how much fun everyone was having last year and got completely jealous. But seriously, totally awesome. My friend, Ale and I got our tickets the minute they went on sale and basically acted like 12 year old girls about the whole thing. Talking about being roomies, planning pre Sewing Summit projects, discussing how over packed we would be and how big of an extra (empty) bag to bring to carry home our goodies.

Photo dump coming up. My apologies for the picture quality. All pictures are camera phone only. I'm not even sure I know WHY I brought my Canon with me. ;)

Obviously, the first thing you do when you arrive in Salt Lake City to attend Sewing Summit, is go fabric shopping. Here we were at Material Girls Quilts and Pine Needles.

And BUY ALL THE FABRIC. Why yes, I did buy the end of the bolt of several Bonnie & Camille prints.

The class line up was so great this year. I had several wonderful and insightful lectures and hands on sewing classes. Here I am with Christina from The Sometimes Crafter in her Foundation Paper Piecing class. I loved finally getting to meet her in person and her class was great. LOOK at that little block I made!

I took the Personal Branding lecture with Olivia Omega and guys, she was AWESOME! So much fun! She insisted that we take a selfie. In class. And post it RIGHT THEN. So here I am with Kaylee, who actually happens to be a local friend that I met through Instagram and our love of sewing. But definitely go check out Olivia's Website and Blog. She has so many wonderful things to share about being yourself and being authentic on your blog.

Heather Bailey was the keynote speaker. HEATHER BAILEY! Her story was wonderful. She talked about how she got started designing fabric for Freespirit and touched on all the other super amazing things she's done. She was beautiful, inspiring, wonderful and sweet and she was genuinely happy to be with us during Sewing Summit.

I didn't get pictures of EVERY class, but I really did take some great ones. Publishing a craft book. Photography. HTML for bloggers. LEGGINGS! I MADE LEGGINGS! And they FIT! I'm pretty pumped about that.

But what I FORGOT to mention, because I'm such a terrible blogger, is that I TAUGHT MY OWN CLASS!!! I taught a group of 30 people how to make mini dresden plates! They did so well! Which is awesome because I was pretty nervous about it. I have a pretty roundabout way of doing things sometimes that I always think only make sense to me. But they made some super adorable tiny dresdens. I got wonderful feedback and felt pretty special to be among so many other talented teachers and speakers.

So that's about it in a very small, short nutshell. I'd have to say, one of the coolest parts (and maybe a little scary) is meeting all these people you have become real friends with, that share the same interests and have never actually met face to face. A really cool feeling. Thank you to Erin and her crew for putting it together. Nice work.
Tickets went on sale this week! Who's going?!?! I sure am. I MAY have been stalking the registration page on the Sewing Summit website all morning and my ticket MAY have been purchased at about 11:02am (they went on sale at 11am) But I'm totally cool about it. Not overly excited. (Eeeeeeek!) I can't wait to meet and sew with so many people in this online sewing community that I've never met in person. Also, this will be my first time leaving my little boy overnight/for longer than just the day. Right now, I'm good with it. I might be a nervous wreck when it's time to leave.

Who else is going??

Oh hi! So, I may have forgotten how to blog and this post might have taken me about a week to write. No really. (correction: original post took me a week, then it vanished into thin air so I'm on week 2, writing this post again. See. Forgot how to blog) ;)

Things are always busy. That's just the way it is. I let my blog get away from me, BUT the good news is that I've done a lot of cool stuff lately, so I'll have plenty to share soon. First up is a little how-to for sewing together triangles. I've seen some really cute triangle quilts lately so I decided I needed to make one myself. I was so annoyed at how much trouble I was having sewing these together. I mean, I was sewing triangles, not parallelograms or trapezoids. Triangles. So I asked my stitchy friends on Instagram for a little help and I'm going to share what I discovered worked best for me. There's really no trick or shortcut to it, just patience.

First things, first, I used the ruler below to cut my triangles. You get 4.5" equilateral triangles. I tried using the 60 degree lines on my straight cutting ruler, but this worked better for me and I found it at my local quilt shop. The directions say to cut 4.5" x WOF strips, then line up your fabric strips on the triangle portion of the ruler. You can cut 5 triangles at a time, more if you layer your fabric. If you're using this ruler, you'll get triangles with 2 sharp points and one flat point. That will be important when you're matching up your pieces. Once you have all of your triangles cut, lay them out just how you want to sew them together. For mine, I just went with a random layout.

Stack up your first row IN ORDER that you will be sewing it. I actually laid them out again right next to my machine just so there would be no placement issues while I was sewing.

Let's sew the first two triangles together. Stack them right sides together making sure to match your sharp points and flat points like below and sew them together using a 1/4" seam.

"Tip" #1: Press your seams OPEN AS YOU GO trying not to stretch those bias edges. You want to sew, press, sew, press, sew, press and so on. I'm a big fan of chain piecing then pressing like a million pieces at once (or recruiting my mom to press a million pieces for me) ;) "Tip" #2: Don't try to chain piece these. I started off chain piecing and it just didn't work. I also almost always press seams to the side, but for this, definitely press open! If you're a strict to-the-side presser, try doing these open, you'll find that you will get much nicer points and your pieces will be easier to match up. So, press seams open, don't chain piece.

Move on to your next triangle, sewing and pressing the same as the first set, making sure to line up your flat and sharp points and pressing your seams open again. Continue sewing all your triangles into rows.

"Tip" #3: Trim your points. Once I had all my rows sewn together, I went through and trimmed the little points off from the "intersections". I thought it would help reduce bulk right where I wanted my fabric to lay flat and my points to be pointy. You can see three little points in the seam below, just chop those off. (but be careful not to chop into the seams of course)

To sew your rows you just want to line up your seams/points really well. Here's "tip" #4: pin. pin. pin. I am so guilty of never pinning. Ever. Don't skip it here! These triangles really got me out of my comfort zone and had me pinning like crazy. Line up each point and put a pin right in your seams. For some of my points I was a bit OCD and spent a little extra time matching the points. If you take your pin and stick it through the tip of the point on the top and bottom layers, wiggle it together a little then pin it flat you'll have those points matching even if you didn't get a perfect 1/4" seam allowance at every point. (that's a lot of pinning points right? Let me know if it doesn't make any sense). Press seams open.

You can see above how sharp the points turned out and how nicely they matched up. Like I said, there's really no trick to this (as I discovered the hard way). You just have to be patient and don't try to find a shortcut. I took a picture of my sewing area so you could see that I pushed my ironing board as close to my machine as I could get it since I had to press after every piece. I'm so used to "batch" quilting that this was really strange. Aaaaand I might be a little bit lazy.

So, if you ever wanted to try piecing triangles, go for it! Be sure to post pictures or share them on Instagram and let me know how these tips worked for you! See you soon. (hopefully)

If anyone else is interested in doing a guest post on my little blog, please let me know. It's been pretty busy over here preparing to move, so I'd love to have you! (If anyone wants to do a post on meal planning/healthy(easy) eating I need an intervention so please email me!) ;).
Over a month this time?! Well, the holidays kind of turn my brain to mush and lots of things get forgotten. We have been doing lots of cool things over here though! First up, we closed on a house just a couple days before Christmas. It's a dream home! I couldn't be more excited to move in. We have selected some of the paint colors and have already started painting all the inside walls, so we will be moving in slowly, making sure everything is ready and perfect before we have to be out of our apartment in March.

Christmas was wonderful! (And exhausting) we just got back yesterday from a trip to Maryland to visit my husbands family. It was quite a whirlwind. It's still a bit of a blur.

And of course, up until the VERY last minute, I was finishing gifts and projects, packing, painting, moving, mothering, cleaning (not really), baking, wrapping, shipping, shopping, decorating. You know, typical holiday stuff. Now it's time to take it all down, be thankful that Christmas doubles as a deadline so you feel like you got a few things marked off your to-do list, and get back to the normal life pace, whatever that is for you.

I'm going to get working on a couple things that maybe should have hit that Christmas/deadline, do some painting in the new house this weekend, pack a few boxes as I go, get working on a new private swap and also on a pretty awesome giveaway opportunity (more on that one later).

OH and my New Year resolution is to ORGANIZE! There should be a place for everything in the new house and I'm planning to make it so organized you'll hate me when I'm done. I'm talking labels, containers, shelves, closet systems, folders, stickers, racks,.... A. Place. For. Everything. Hold me to it, would ya? What's your resolution?

xoxo

Ps. Is it possible to move your images when blogging from an iPad?? Anyone have tips on that? :-D
If you follow me on Instagram you might know that my husband and I are in the process of buying a house here in Texas (yay) so the past couple weeks have been filled with house hunting, offers and counter offers, Thanksgiving, stocking making, home inspections, quilt finishing, baby raising, house keeping (minimal house keeping. Minimal.), holiday decorating, Christmas shopping, travel planning... Etc. etc. etc. so little time for blogging. I recently saw a fellow blogger with blogposts and plans scheduled and written out on her to-do list and another with like 10 pre-written posts ready to go for future dates. This is where I would love to be with my blogging. That would just be such a wonderful place. I'm really going to aim for better organization in 2013. Maybe it will start with our new home. We are outgrowing our apartment so maybe our new house will have a nice place for everything. I'm getting the chance to clean out, de-clutter, simplify and start fresh and I'm hoping its the jump start I need to work on my organization and schedule. (Motivation too maybe?) I'm only getting this chance one more time (hopefully) so I don't want to mess it up. It's also the opportunity to pick some fabulous paint colors and new furniture pieces to make our new house cozy and that's really exciting! Any local DFW readers have any fab furniture/decorating places they like to shop? Any non local readers have favorite online decorating sites? Shops? What's your very favorite paint color? Favorite rug? Design blog? Budget friendly design/DIY ideas? Pins? Start throwing out some ideas for me! I'm not wasting this chance to explore my options and really make our future home perfect for our family. I have every intention of sharing our progress in my new organized life ;) here on my blog as well. (Throwing that out there so maybe ill be held accountable... ) Thanks for the help! Here are some recent Instagram images for you because I don't want to leave this post picture-less. xoxo

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jessie Lathroumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08602230754857014746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382414936296307584.post-1378338095601728782012-11-09T11:18:00.003-05:002012-11-09T11:19:27.561-05:00{Paper Box Quilt Co. I'm not sure if you know this, but the holidays are coming. FAST! Thanksgiving is in about 2 weeks and then Christmas is practically like a couple days later. I don't know about you, but I am THRILLED about the thought of getting my decorations out!

So, lets get ready! I am making stockings. Custom stockings actually, any color you want because, lets be serious, all colors are festive when there are twinkle lights involved. (and adding turquoise makes everything awesome, don't you think?) Listings are up in my shop so go get them! And hurry because there's a limited quantity and only like a day until Christmas! ;)
Are any of my readers participating in the PTS9 swap??

First, thanks to everyone that entered my little giveaway! I am hoping to get a few sets of coasters made up for the shop, so stay tuned if you were wanting to get one but didn't win.

Second, I have received some fabulous Instagram feedback on an ornament that I made recently and several requests for a tutorial. So,... without further ado, my very first TUTORIAL! I would like to start of by saying that I did, in fact, find the idea for this fabric star ornament on Pinterest. However, when I clicked through to find the tutorial it was in another language. I relied on the pictures to put the star together, but it was a bit of a challenge. SO, I'm putting together something for all my English speaking friends to try out too. (here is the original tutorial)

You will need:

- (4) strips of fabric, measuring 3.5" x 12"

- Fabric Glue

- A large eye tapestry needle
-12"-15" of 1/8' ribbon

- Beads (optional)

Start with choosing your four prints. Cut them to measure 3.5"x12".

Iron all your pieces in half to crease. Then iron each side into the center to meet at your crease. Fold in half and iron again to get a nice, smooth strip measuring approximately 7/8"x12". (this is essentially a double fold binding strip)

Another little bit of ironing, fold your strip lengthwise so that the top half of your strip is about 2" shorter that the bottom half and iron to crease.

Let's weave our pieces together. With your short ends facing UP, overlap each piece one at a time as shown in the pictures above. For your last piece, overlap the previous piece you added, then slip both ends through your first strip as shown in the last picture above.

Wiggle, pull and tighten your fabric strips until your piece looks like the picture above.

Turn your piece over so the long ends are now on top. Starting in one corner, fold your strip over your piece (image 1). Move along to the next strip and fold over (image 2). Continue with the 3rd piece. On your fourth piece, pull it through the fold you created with your first strip fold (image 3).

You should have a woven piece that looks like this with all your strip ends measuring approximately the same length.

Making the points: Using one of your strips on the "top" of your piece (you should be able to determine this better when looking at your own piece) fold it to the back at an angle and back to the front at another angle (image 1 above). Fold your point in half to create your finished point. You now need to slide the end of your strip into the fold you created as shown above in picture 2. You will have a tiny bit of excess fabric peeking through in the center, don't worry, we'll fix that later.

Skip your "back" strip, and continue making points in the same way around the front of your star. You will create 4 points on this side, every other strip. (above) Turn your star over and do the exact same thing on that side. I had to loosen my strips a bit to pull pieces through other pieces, then I just tightened them all back up.

At this point I hope this is all making sense, ;) and, you should have an actual STAR! Yeah!

So let's trim up those ugly ends. Looking at pictures 1 & 2 above, I actually pulled each point further through GENTLY in order to trim the ends enough to hide inside my star. Be careful not to pull your point all the way out, just enough to trim it up. Then pull it back to resemble your point, being VERY CAREFUL again, not to pull it all the way out. Just wiggle it gently until it takes its shape back. Do this with all the ends that are showing in the center of your star.

I totally cranked the steam on my iron and ironed the heck out of my star once all my ends were trimmed. I just wanted a crisp, flat perfectly pointy star. :)

I'm pretty sure the tutorial I used stopped here, but I was kind of worried about my star falling apart after years of use, or that it would take about 3 seconds for my one year old to rip it to shreds. I decided to make mine a little more durable. I had this tube of liquid stitch, fabric glue and it worked perfectly. I put a small bead of glue in as many spaces as I could. Don't get crazy and squeeze glue all over so it's oozing out of every corner. Just dab a little wherever you think it will help to keep your star from coming apart.

On the original tutorial, she used a nifty punch thing that chopped a hole through all layers of the folded fabric in order to hang your star. I didn't have that punch thing on hand, so I had to come up with another hanging method. I used 1/8" satin ribbon and a tapestry needle to thread it down through the top of the star, out the bottom, back up the other side and out the top where you started. You now have your two ends of ribbon coming out the top. You can finish it off from here however you like. I tied a knot, added a decorative bead, tied the ends together and trimmed them up even.

Now, you have this super cute, super easy, super inexpensive star ornament to hand out to all your friends and family this holiday! My brothers, their wives, me & Tom exchange surprise handmade ornaments so I was testing some for this year and this was one of my favorites. I plan to tie these to packages, hang some on my windows. Basically, just put them everywhere because, well, they're just adorable.

Please, please, PLEASE contact me with any questions you may have about putting this together. I'm not entirely sure all my steps are completely clear and since this is my first tutorial, it may just be all gibberish. Also, please link me up with your stars or tag me on Instagram (Insidethepaperbox) so I can see what you come up with.

See you soon! xoxo

So the other night I reached 200 Instagram followers! As promised below, I'm hooking up a giveaway to say thanks for your support! It's been pretty busy around here and sometimes (most times) its easier to keep up to date on Instagram than here on my blog. I'm going to try to work on that, so don't go anywhere, this giveaway isn't JUST for Instagrammers,... ;)

I have been interested in breaking in to a swap on Flickr but it's not all that easy if you've tried, or if you have in fact been a part of them. Completely understandable! I would hate to be stuck with the partner that didn't hold up their end of the bargain, you know? So, the swap hosts want to see that you have actively participated in a successful swap in your flickr stream. (keep reading, it will tie back to these coasters,... I think,...) ;) Anyway, Kelly and I agreed to make table toppers for each other in a private swap so I would have all the evidence I needed to be considered for, maybe the Pillow Talk Swap. One idea that Kelly threw out was coasters. Everyone needs a place to put their drink right?? SO along with her table topper, I included a set of four granny square coasters. They turned out so cute, I'm going to give a set to one of you!

*Please note that the set shown is the set I sent to Kelly :) Your set will be 4 red/aqua/pink coasters, similar to the one shown in the pictures (which are just not completed yet, but 4 from this picture)*

HOW TO ENTER: Just leave me a comment. About anything! You don't have to be an Instagram follower to enter, HOWEVER if you ARE an IG follower of mine, you get an extra entry! Just leave me a SEPARATE comment telling me you follow me on IG and you'll get two chances to win! If you're not already following along on IG, then head over, join in the fun, then leave a comment letting me know you are and I'll get you an extra entry too! I will leave the giveaway open until Friday, Sept 28 when I will announce the lucky winner! Good luck.

Finished coasters measure approx. 5.5 inches, are insulated, quilted & bound. These little beauties will most likely be headed to Paper Box Quilt Co. as well. I hope you are all having a great week!

Soooooo,... I was checking out things on Instagram the other day (what's new??) and realized that I have ALMOST 200 followers!! (185 to be exact) That's pretty cool! Then, I decided that once I reached the 200 mark, I would do a little giveaway and it will definitely involve these tiny little red, aqua and pink granny squares :) SO,... if you're not already checking out ITPB on Instagram (insidethepaperbox), then head over, follow me and stay tuned for giveaway details!

Shortly after that, I started scheming with a fellow IGer an idea for a potential quilt-a-long. The RockstarQAL (as it will be referred to from here no on) is where you take inspiration from your favorite band/rockstar/musical artist and create a quilt. You'll use your inspiration to choose your fabric, prints, colors, pattern, etc. I want to know if there's any interest in doing this in a formal manner, i.e. sharing progress, starting a flickr group, giveaways, link ups and start/end dates. Whatdaya think??? Anyone want to get in on this??

Here is my fav band, and the inspiration for my Rockstar quilt:

I love these guys! Many, many years ago, a friend of mine and I went to a concert in Dallas during their Return Of Saturn tour and fell in love! It was pretty much a dream night, we had backstage passes, met the band, partied with the band, danced with the band, and were invited to drive out to Houston the next day for another concert and another backstage party. Um YEAH! What a weekend! Anyway, I will be pulling fabric based on this awesome group to make my quilt. Who would you choose????

These sweet moments don't happen often these days. This little guy is just too busy playing to stop to snuggle with his mommy!! BUT I got my moment today and napped with my boy on the couch and it was awesome! He is just growing so fast, I'll take what I can get!
My tiny niece, Elizabeth Kate was born a liiiiiiiiiitle early,... that over achiever! She arrived July 18, a full 6 weeks before her due date!! She is doing great and at home with her mom & dad already!

I guess I was lucky that I started her quilt early enough that all I had to do was trim up the scalloped edge and put the binding on. I used the Sweet Pea pattern from Camille's book, Simplify. This is the first quilt I've made from her book but have wanted to make these sweet scallops since I got it! I LOVED making the binding for this one!

Also welcome Chi and Izabella, all 3 born within 3 weeks of each other, quilts not shown.

So, I took these pictures almost three months ago, but since it's still summer, I'll excuse myself. There's just something about a street carnival that says summer and I can't help but take a million pictures because those ferris wheels,.... they're just so nostalgic! This was a carnival/street fair held on "Main Street" where I live. We ate corn dogs, played crazy carnival games and played with ALL the animals at the petting zoo! Cash loved every minute of it and was sound asleep by the end of the day!

It's pretty unfortunate that it gets SO hot in the summer here in Texas! I would love to do more things like this but I don't want to take Cash out on such hot days and I know I don't want to be outside in 100+ degree weather! :( I'm hoping for a little rain & some somewhat cooler days coming soon.

What kinds of things do you take your kids to do in the summer? Any good indoor, inexpensive/free activities for a one year old you can share??
I'm gonna be honest with you, I am so bad at it! There are always so many things I want/need to do and pages of lists to remind me and even when I have the time, I still don't seem to get them done. I'm not just talking about sewing, I mean cleaning, cooking, playing, sewing, showering, blogging, photographing,.... This first year of motherhood has been quite the roller coaster! It has gone so fast and just when I start to settle into our "routine" that little guy changes,... AGAIN! He is growing and changing at warp speed and I can not keep up with him! You would think that I would use the time during his naps to get things like cleaning the bathrooms or making the beds done,... oh no,... not me. Sleep wins out over everything practically every time,... I'm not going to lie. I'm a late nighter,... I can NOT get myself to go to bed at a reasonable hour if my life depended on it. Almost NEVER before midnight (12:02am right now). Cash gets up at 6:30!!! What in the world am I thinking?? So, at 8:30, when he's ready for his morning nap, SO AM I! I go right back to bed and love every minute of it. Then, we play, eat, go outside (when it's not like a million degrees out) dance, run errands and at 2:00, when he's ready for his afternoon nap, sometimes, I am too. Now, I don't ALWAYS sleep during this time. Sometimes I sew, shower,... clean, kinda. But I still can't seem to focus on what I should really be working on. I've always been this way. Always up too late. Always putting things off.

In my perfect world, I would have time for everything I want/need to get done. My house would sparkle, my projects would practically finish themselves, I would ALWAYS get plenty of sleep (and never be tired, ever). I would be the winner of the mom-of-the-year award. My WEEKLY blog posts would be interesting and contain real pictures, like the old days. Oh, and I would be a master chef and still have time to workout too. :) Wouldn't that be AWESOME!?!?!

Anyway, the point of this is that I want to push myself to "be better". Basically, for me, this means,.... take on less. Make my lists shorter, more manageable so I can actually finish them sometimes. Clean SOMETHING every day (other than the area under Cash's high chair). Go to bed earlier so sleep won't win during the day. Take a couple pictures, with my actual camera every day, just a couple, even if they are totally random. Blog, once a week, about something cool. Cook (sometimes) Fix my hair more. But I'll keep that play/dance time because that's the best part of my day :)

I'm keeping it real,... I'll never be a master chef ;)
